How will you tell them?

Slide1My children used to love stories. I spend a lot of my spare time reading and writing and enjoy escaping into the world of the story. The other day, the owner of Business in Heels Illawarra, posted about the importance of telling people a story when you talk about your business.

  1. What stories do you need to tell? And how do you tell them? How do you tell the press if you want to publicise your business?

When something exciting is happening in your business, you may want to write a Press Release. That can be a bit daunting, but I make it simple with some guidelines and a free template. If you would like one, just email [email protected] with the subject “free Press Release Template” and it’s yours.

Press releases.

What are they?

They are stories about your business that would interest a wide range of readers. It is your written story to the media.

How do I write them?

If you would like a complimentary press release template, please email [email protected] with the subject “free Press Release Template” and I’ll send it to you.

What are some dos and don’ts with press releases?

DO think about the audience and write in the type of language that would speak to them.

DO use an interesting title that grabs people’s attention.

DO get right to the point in the first paragraph (who, what, when, where, why, how.)

DO use double spacing

DO your homework about which journalists you should contact.

DO send it by email, unless your research shows you that the journalist you need to contact prefers a different method. Write it within the email, not as an attachment. Often journalists won’t open emails with attachments.

DO edit and proof-read your work carefully.

DO include quotes – experts or important people or YOU.

DO include some proof (statistics, evidence) if you can.

DON’T write more than you need to. Four paragraphs are usually enough (see the template.)

DON’T write more than one or two pages

DON’T send photos. If there are photos available, write a note that there are photos available.
